Your Story is Valued Here

Avon Academy 2026 graduate Gwen Maxwell gave this message at commencement on May 27, 2026. Not only are her words inspirational, they demonstrate the grit, heart, smarts, and hope that are characteristic of our Academy students. The following has been lightly edited for this format.

Congratulations to the class of 2026 and to the classes that have already graduated from Avon Academy. Our future students will look to you for the courage to keep moving forward.

Welcome families, friends, faculty, and the graduating class of 2026.

First, I want to share my great appreciation to the incredibly devoted staff that have made this day possible for each of us. The selflessness, support, and caring nature that's been shown to us has never gone unnoticed.

Your story is valued here. Gwen Maxwell

When we first entered high school, graduation felt extremely far away and almost impossible to imagine reaching. We all have an upbringing and a journey that led us to Avon Academy even though not everyone's stories are known, your story is valued here. We didn't take the traditional route; we faced many challenges, setbacks, and hardships. Some of us walked the halls carrying fear, grief, instability, or responsibilities heavier than most people our age should have to carry. There were moments where graduation felt unachievable. Even through the exhaustion, hesitance, and struggles, we kept going.

Avon Academy is much more than a school, it was a place where we became understood, seen, and reminded that our past does not determine our worth. Through life we've learned that success does not look the same for everyone. Some people move quickly, and others take longer to find their path, and that is OK. What matters is the resilience we show in every phase of life.

The people surrounding us—friends, teachers, staff, and families—remind us we are capable of far more than the limits we placed on ourselves. They celebrated every accomplishment no matter if it was making it to school on time every day of the week or passing the class you thought you'd never stop retaking. Every person sitting here today has fought through their own struggles and some of our loved ones have been the reason why we never gave up and kept moving forward. The challenges we have overcome is what makes this moment so meaningful.

Although my mom is only able to be here in spirit and my dad not always being present in my life, I would like to thank the one of few people that has stayed consistent, Memaw Karen. Your constant love, empathy, support, and belief in me helped me out of the lowest moments in life. No matter how many times I messed up you never doubted or belittled me. Not once have you stopped reminding me of my potential and strength, I will always be grateful.

This is much more than a diploma. It is proof of growth, perseverance, and strength. Be proud of yourself. Our paths may have not been traditional but they were real. Keep moving forward. Gwen Maxwell

As we move on from Avon Academy many of us are stepping into unique paths and futures. Some are going to college, starting careers, moving out of state, or still trying to figure out what the next step may be. No matter what your mindset is, nothing is out of reach. Continue carrying pride in yourself, and use every moment as an opportunity to grow.

To the graduating class of 2026, this is much more than a diploma. It is proof of growth, perseverance, and strength. Be proud of yourself. Our paths may have not been traditional but they were real. Keep moving forward. In moments when you may feel stuck or uncertain, remember how far you have already come. We have so much more life to live. Make the most of it. I know it sounds cliché, but live every day like it's your last. Appreciate the ones around you. Take every opportunity you can and never stop believing in your potential.

Congratulations, class of 2026. We finally made it.
